Axis stuttering/freezing during while game running

Postby Nysius » Sat Dec 10, 2022 2:56

Hi,

occasionally while playing a game (star citizen and now tested with star wars squadrons). Gladiator Evo will occasionally stutter/freeze while moving along the different axis. I can keep the config program open while doing this and i can see the different sliders freeze and then jump to the new current position. As such, in game, i will over steer or will receive input lag before movement occurs. I can't exactly pinpoint what is causing this and i've tried to replicate different scenarios to isolate the problem. This happens in both star citizen and star wars squadrons so i believe the application isn't related. Is this a USB connection/PC issue or could there be something wrong with the joystick? It seems to be specific to my right stick and not the left, though i use the left stick for smaller movements which may not be as noticeable as pitch/yaw/roll.

I have reset to default, flashed the 2.122 software, and re-calibrated multiple times and the issue still persists.

any help would be appreciated. thanks!

Considering your other related post, I think you might have problems with either USB drivers or your power supply not strong enough to hold all your USB peripherals. Try disconnecting some unneeded USB devices or reinstall USB drivers.

Okay i'll try this. I just purchased an externally powered USB hub in hopes of that providing a solution

Just did some more testing. swapped USB ports, cables between my left Gladiator EVO and right Gladiator EVO. The issue is only persistent in the right gladiator EVO no matter the port or cable, isolating it as a possible hardware or software issue with the device. The left joystick works without any problems. Any solutions?

Is there a router or wi-fi extender closer to the right hand Glad?

No, the only router is quite far away

Going to have to jump in here, since I spotted some of those gaps as in the OP's pics on my system too a few weeks ago... didn't think anything of it at the time, but now ... I'm not so sure...

Tester gaps.jpg

I circled the "gaps" that I could find - I guess this isn't normal?

I did disable my PC's built-in WIFI module before testing. Since my Wifi-connection in this room is pretty bad, I do use it to set a hotspot for my phone, while the PC is connected to the router via a power-line adapter. There is an extender in my office, but it's at least 2 or 3 meters away from my stick.

So the only solution I can think of would be my 550W Seasonic PSU being overwhelmed - I have all seven USB plugs populated (mouse, keyboard, HUB connection-cable, Gunfighter, RGB-mousemat, PS3Eye-camera for Opentrack, Rift-S VR set) plus I'm running my Delanclip through the PC's front-side USB. Although, according to various PSU calculators, the PSU should be more than enough for this system, even with all the stuff I have connected.. :D

Is it ok to run the GF through a powered USB hub? I'm using both my Warthog throttle and my MFG Crosswinds through my monitor's powered 3.0 hub and they never acted up, but I'm not sure if the GF should be connected this way.

EDIT: Just tried the GF on the USB hub and it was the same thing - happens with all axes as far as I can tell (X, Y, mini-stick and brake-lever) - plus it's the same thing with all three axes of my WHT and with the MFG Crosswind's three axes when I tested those two. Could this simply be a problem with VKB joytester not displaying things correctly?

EDIT2: Just threw the question out over on discord and three guys reported the very same behavior on all sorts of VKB and non-VKB devices... guess it's probably just joytester not drawing things correctly, since these gaps all showed up when the line-graph intersects with that dotted line (I hadn't even noticed that).

Whew!

I'm honestly running out of ideas. I tried to create a registry file to maybe overwrite something i may have done with windows when dealing with my USB disconnect/reconnect issue. i recalled trying to configure the sticks with windows as opposed to the vkb config program with one of the sticks before i solved the usb problem. It seems to have made the axis freezing/delay better and way less common but it still happens. My external USB hub arrived and did not help at all. gave me the controller disconnect/reconnect constantly problem. Not sure how to isolate if it's the joystick or my PC at this point. Does GPU utilization have an effect on input lag/delay or anything like that? i've literally updated everything i can think of with my PC including flashing the latest BIOS version.

If you've calibrated through Windows that surely is a problem. You'll have to reset the calibration by running VKBDevCfg, selecting your joystick, clicking the MakeReg button, then manually running the new created .reg file, which will be in the same folder with VKBDevCfg. Use VKBDevCfg afterwards to properly calibrate.

I was able to test the joysticks on another PC and they work just fine (even on a USB 2.0 port) given the same conditions. Safe to conclude that my PC is the problem. Some combination of hardware/software is interfering with the joysticks or my motherboard or USB ports may be damaged (possibly from long term static shock through the peripherals as a best guess). For me, they only work on USB 3.1 gen 2 ports and i cannot figure out why other than maybe because those were the only two ports i didn't use, and thus may have been spared from damage. I'm going to try a complete windows re-install and see if this fixes the problem.
