First things that come to mind are: Have you fullly calibrated the stick in VKB Devconfig? Then calibrated in game? These sticks are really precise generally but you have to start there. It's important. Also--DO NOT try to calibrate these sticks in windows. Bad things will happen.

It's been a long time since I've put any effort into using a joystick with War Thunder so It might be a bit different now but I doubt it. So yeah sorry this is more of a rant post then real help.

Back when I first started playing the game like 7-8 years ago I made quite an effort to fly with my MS Sidewinder I was using at the time. Aiming at ground targets is fairly difficult, but A2A is a bit better. The planes just tend to bounce around a lot making it hard to get on or stay on target. Changing the sensitivity in game can help but it's still not easy to aim at least compared to how easy it is in mouse aim mode.

Then you have the issue of looking around which is absolutely necessary to always be looking around and not super easy to do with just the joystick unless you also have something like Track IR. So you have to use a hat on the stick or take your hand off the stick and look around with the mouse.

Ideally I'd like to be able to fly with a joystick but also have mouse aim active so I could have the immersion but switch to a mouse when I needed it for better aim, but last time I tried you can't do that, or it's janky enough that I didn't feel it was usable.

It's just way easier to aim with a mouse then a joystick in War Thunder and unless you're playing the sim mode and want as much of an immersive experience as you can get in this game you're better off just sticking with keyboard and mouse if you want to do well.

im with you.. the game is for play with mouse like i see it... when someone wanna try a joystick and play like a plane is horrible all and is really bad aiming vs mouse...
i think first a problem with the joysticks or a bad config... but like i read u i think this is normal for the game and thats so sad..

for look arround thats nots a big problem cuz the vkb gladiatior have bottons that can help to do it..

Don't play War Thunder myself. But if the game recognizes the axii of the stick you could set up a profile for WT in Devconfig with curves that might tune out the jumpiness. Keep tweaking it until you find something that might work.

Give this a try :

I actually play realistic battles with joystick and have been since 2014 so I might be in a unique position to help you with this. I started with a logitech 3dpro, then Gladiator NXT Evo, and as of yesterday I've been using a gunfighter3 mcg ultimate.

The wobble is there but its due to settings not being set up correctly regardless of joystick. This isnt going to happen over night but you will get better, Ive noticed it takes about a week for me to adjust to new flight sticks or settings and then its like something just clicks.

First things first, the Gladiator with a simple calibration is simply amazing for war thunder. Once youve done a simple calibration lets move on to the game itself. These are going to be just gettings started settings but they should get you close to where you want to be starting out.

The following goal will be stability with a minimal impact to responsiveness, with the eventual goal of increasing responsivness over time:

#1
Set non linearity for all axis X,Y,Z to 2.0 to 2.3:
Double click on the axis to make the menu option pop up. This will smooth out your smaller inputs making fine adjustments easier, this is probably by far the most important.

#2
Set an in game dead zone of .04. for each axis listed above:
This isnt because your stick isnt in calibrated, its simply to give you a little wiggle room for when you use twist axis since you inherently add some Y or X axis usually, it minimizes the bleed over if that makes any sense. You can always lower it later but for getting started it helps with stability.

#3
Sensitivity:
Roll-100%
Pitch-50%
Yaw-25%

I cant emphasize this enough, these are training wheel settings. I'm currently flying with all these at 100% but asking someone to do that with out any practice is simply asking too much. With the Gladiator NXT Evo I was flying at 100% all 3 settings and it was super responsive yet precise... I could not do that with the logitech 3d pro.

I suggest you do test flights, and not try to actually fly combat initially. I can also tell you that having some damper applied to your flight stick helps with stability I pretty much had my Gladiator set up to return to center with no bounce. The damper on the Gladiator is a fantastic feature I recommend you use it for stability in flight.

Try these settings and let me know what you think, I'd be happy to go into a custom mission with you in game and help you set up some very basic settings to get started.

best of luck :)
