Question about the dampers

Postby Drano » Sat Mar 20, 2021 2:25

Ok so I've had the original MKI GF for a few years now. Since before I had a grip for it! It's been great. I think it was last year I upgraded it with the MKIII electronics, etc. In the process I seem to remember some clearance issue or something and in order to get around it I decided to just remove the dampers entirely. I'd had them almost fully open anyway.

I've since added a 200mm extension and now I'm considering putting them back. Think I could do with a smidge of damping. I've also made a new base that makes accessing the damper adjusting nuts from the bottom fairly problematic. I used to have it clamped on so it was easily removed. Now it's bolted on. So before I start into it I was wondering. Is it physically possible to install them as they are on the current GF facing upwards? Or is the design from MKI to MKIII totally different? I hope I can. It'd be a lot easier just taking the dust cover off to tweak them.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry mate, on GFI you need to open up the bottom plate in order to adjust the dampers. But If you'll get there and put the pads back I strongly recommend to use Nyogel 767A on them, I promise it'll work great especially with the extension.

Thanks I was afraid that was the case. I just forgot what the deal was with them. Nyogel was part of the plan. Prior to my latest stand attachment I was able to take the stick off fairly easily and had made a base plate with holes drilled in it so I could tweak the nuts without taking anything else apart. It was a side stick then. With the extension I've moved it to the center and reworked the base attachment to take up less room in the crotchular area. I've since replaced an aluminum box made for the base plate with a 4" steel disc bolted right to the bottom of the GF. That's bolted to some 1" pipe going to a heavy flange on the floor. Very sturdy and going nowhere! It's a plumbing thing! I could probably just do the same thing to the disc but was hoping to avoid it. Since it's all together now! Dangit!
