Saving settings with VKB Config disables the toggle for A1 button to work as a ministick - Gladiator NXT R Premium

Postby Angelo Jacinto » Thu Jan 28, 2021 5:49

Hi,

I've been experimenting with VKB Config to change buttons and settings on my Gladiator NXT. When I set and save the settings to the stick, I lose the ability to use the A1 stick toggle mode. I would have to reload the default config of the stick for it to be usable again. How do I save the settings and retain the ability to toggle the A1 stick functions on and off?

Thanks!
Angelo

If you change the uSSw function assigned by default to A1 center push button then it definitely wouldn't work as intended anymore. If you change anything else then that shouldn't affect the A1 ministick. That's why it'd be best to offer some example of what you're trying to do; screenshots would be great too.

Actually all I wanted to do was to assign the En1 and En2 dials as trim controls (screen1.jpg).

I changed these, and when I saved, (screen2.jpg) the A1 ministick lost the toggle control.

Incidentally, can I get tips on the best way to assign En1 and En2 as trim dials? There are a lot of choices, so far the only thing that worked somewhat was that they were buttons. It works, but the adjustments this way moved too slow in Microsoft Flight Simulator. I also tried changing just the button speed to 4/4. Same effect also happened, the A1 ministick would lose toggle control on save.

Check this thread from the Il-2 Russian forums, where Alex, the developer of the VKBDevCfg posts different profiles for the Gladiator NXT and explains them. One of those profiles does exactly what you're after.
Use Google Translate.

Thanks! The link was helpful in mapping the trim dials, but how do I actually save the profile without losing toggle control on the A1 stick?

Check the thread again, the author even posts profiles with those changes so you could download them and load them into your joystick. This video tells you about profiles a bit, how to change them, save them etc.
If you're doing everything right and still have issues get the latest beta firmware and software for the Gladiator NXT, flash it and work on it.

Thanks! Flashing to the latest beta firmware fixed the toggle issue.

For the trim dials, I went through most of the Il-2 profiles. They make the En1 and En2 dials as sliders for trim, which is great, but they kill the functions for some other stuff like the F1-F3 buttons, which isn't.
Is there a way to bind En1 and En2 without killing other buttons on the stick?

Profile 1.1.1-2 seems to do what you want, setting Tempo function for F buttons, which would give you a short press as a button and a long press as an axis modifier.

Thanks! Anyway, I tried out that profile again and while the En1-2 seem to work in VKB Config, it doesn't do that at all in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Looks like this will take some more tinkering.

Not sure which profile, but do try to bind them to either digital (buttons) or analog (axes) in MSFS.

This approach worked in assigning En1 and En2 as trim dials in Microsoft Flight Simulator.

1. Under Action > Axes > Profile, change the settings in axes 7 and 8 as shown in the following screenshot.
screen1.jpg

2. Under Action > Buttons > Profile > Physical Layer, select Encoder for areas Line 1-Line 2|Reg#1. This maps the En1 (Axis 7) dial.
Use the settings in the following screenshot. Repeat the process for Line 3-Line 4|Reg#1 for En2 (Axis 8) dial.
screen2.jpg

3. Set the changes to save them on the stick. Go to "Set Up Game Controllers" under Windows Control Panel. The sliders should now be available. They can now be mapped to whatever Axis settings in the game.

Attaching the profile I created for this. Hope it helps someone looking for a similar use case. :)

But why are they under the same name Slider? No error here, name the 8th axis Dial and you will have 2 independent encoders.

The 8th axis was a dial in one of the mapping profiles I tried, but I couldn't map it to an axis-based control in Microsoft Flight Simulator at all. When I mapped it as a slider, it appeared in the controls and it just worked, so I left it at that. I had En1 for elevator trim axis, and En2 for other axis-based stuff like spoilers or flaps. I guess the axis assignments gave the differentiation.
