New Extension not working

Postby Drano » Mon Jan 04, 2021 23:51

OK after a long journey I finally got a 200mm extension for my Rev A Gunfighter today. Awesome! I plugged it all up, but with the grip on, the LED lights on the black box go dark. Take the grip off, it's back. Put it on, it's dead. This rings a bell, I thought! I remember having this exact issue when I'd updated from the MKI to MKIII internals with the update kit some months back. Even tho I followed the video step by step and even paused it to make sure I had, the problem persisted. I was sure I'd gotten a dead PCB. The solution was to reverse the red and black wires coming from the stick connector inside the base at the 3-wire plug. Once I did that it popped right back and has been fine ever since. I'm thinking this extension is wired the other (right? updated?) way. Remember, I'd changed mine to get the MKIII update running. Is there a way to change the wiring inside the extension? Can I just reverse the same wires in there? That is if you think that might be the problem. I haven't actually checked continuity on the connections yet. I'm not thinking that's it as this is the exact behavior as with before. Thinking it might be easier than taking the base apart again. I may be doing that anyway if I want to add springs, and likely will but lets get this thing back running first. Thanks guys.

I would go with checking the continuity of the extension's wires first. Check if pin1 goes to pad1 (same angle of the triangle), pin2 to pad2 and pin3 to pad3.

Will look at that tonight. Only reason I didn't do it right out of the gate was because of what happened with the red/black wires at the connector in the base before doing the MKIII upgrade. Mine are now "reversed". I'm guessing this extension is just wired the "other" way. Mine is an EARLY early Rev A. I had it for months sitting in the box before the MCG-Pro was even available!

Ok I just checked continuity. Looking at the three contacts from the top end of the extension. I'll call #1 the one adjacent the pin(center) and going counter clockwise #2 (right) and #3(left).

Using the same method looking from the bottom it seems that #1 and #2 are reversed. #3 is right. The good news is I'm getting a signal across them all from end to end. The easy one to nail down is #1 the pin and pin hole mark that one nicely even if I was getting dyslexic with the others! That one is definitely off. These posts and flats should match up so something is miswired internally.

Took the lower part of the extension apart. There's a connector there that has the three wires in it. The colors don't match. Coming from the top end of the extension to the bottom the colors go yellow to black, red to yellow and black to red.

If corresponding pins/pads don't share the same color wire then it's wrong. How good are you with soldering? :)

It's a matter of swapping out the wires in that connector. I got an education in that with the GF3 upgrade kit episode. I'm on it!

Btw, could you take/post pictures before de/re-soldering?

Okie doke. Nothing a multi-meter, a couple of small tools and a flashlight couldn't handle. Was a matter of swapping out the wires on that little connector in the extension. As I'd said before, I had to swap a pair around to get the GF3 upgrade working so the extension was probably wired right---just not right for my stick! Looks like I'm back in business. Well...other than lowering my mount to fit.

Another disaster averted. :D

So which wires you had to swap inside the extension? And at which end you did it?

Just for clarity about the wires thing here's the post about the upgrade kit. My issue then is described here:

I remember your GFIII upgrade issues. How about now, which wires were in the wrong position?

I put them back in the connectors so they matched color for color. That put the posts and pads in the right place. But that didn't get it. This time I swapped yellow and red on the top side of the extension and that's got it. I looked at my post from before and I'd swapped the red and black that time. As long as it works.

Now to tweak my floor mount. A 12" flange with a 2" pipe threaded to it. Hehe it's a plumbing thing! Needs to be a little shorter now!
