Have played with VKBDevCfg for a while but I feel I'm not even close to the solution. The desired functionality is:
Mode 1:
- A3 HAT works as default, all HAT directions are just buttons
- The top LED is, say, blue
Then I push the HAT (button #10) and the mode changes to Mode 2:
- A3 HAT directions trigger macros (keyboard keypresses)
- The top LED is, say, red
Then I push the HAT (button #10) again and Mode 1 is re-activated. And so on.
Is that possible?

Clarify - are macros running (a chain of sequential programmed keys) or just individual keyboard keys? Give an example of what should be launched.
Re: Kosmosima: two modes of A3 HAT & LED
Series of keystrokes like "down, up, left, left". Four such series for four HAT directions in Mode 2.
The macros are not the issue, though. I struggle to switch modes and to modify LED colour when mode changes.

Re: Kosmosima: two modes of A3 HAT & LED
I feel like the thread goes in wrong direction. Or, at least, not a direction I'd like it to go.
So, let me rephrase my question:
How should I configure button, A3 HAT and top LED to make the button switch between two "modes" in which:
- the HAT behaves differently
- LED has different colour
?

Re: Kosmosima: two modes of A3 HAT & LED
This way:
1. Set up that HAT to be Shift activated (Mode, if you prefer), like here;
2. Close VKBDevCfg and navigate to its folder. Open the file called zconfig.ini, open it and add this line: User=Developer under the [User] section. Save it and close it;
3. Go to Global/ External/ LEDs tab and pick one of the lines with External set as Event. Pull down the roll menu and set it up as Shift (1). Set the OP1 as 1 (2) and LED# as 10 (the RGB LED on grip's head) (3). Play with the settings at (4) to set up your preferred color.
4. Click Set when done (5).
