With the USB cable connected and the grip removed, you can see the voltage on the top pins relative to the bottom Gnd. It should be on the left + 3.3v, on the right - about + 2.6v or a little more.

Ron61 YOU ARE A LEGEND!!!!! Thank you so much. Using your information I checked the connector plate and sure enough there was one dead connector (the blue lettered one in your photo. I then used the multimeter and started working back through the wiring and found a connector where the wire plugs into a circuit board that was dodgy. It is an crap job but using a big magnifier and some tweezers I was able to repair the plug.
I am sure that there had been some issue with this since new as the LEDS on the joystick grip (red and green) have always both been on since day 1. My sons grip only had the green LED on and also one of the buttons never worked but now the button has started working the red LED has gone out and I think everything is perfect.
I am now off to jump into DCS and give it a good shakedown.
