Gladiator NXT Premium Right x-y axis jitter/twitching

Postby watchmetry » Mon Dec 27, 2021 6:28

Hello,
For clarification, this problem started 2 weeks ago after I've had this stick for just under a year

1. Gladiator NXT Premium Right
2. v2.08_8
3.#10 springs
4. Default cams
5. VKB Device Config v0.92.17
6. Joytester screenshot/GIF attached
7. VKBdevconfig screenshot/GIF attached.

It seems as though the stick along the y/x-axis, begins to just spike/twitch/jitter up and down. I have attempted recalibration multiple times, I have attempted a firmware reset via ZBootLoader, but none of these issues appear to resolve this problem. I'm really hoping this is not a hardware fault, but hopefully someone else has encountered this issue and knows a fix.

I also downloaded firmware from the vkb site and Flashed it. Reset everything to Default, and followed the instructions to Re-Calibrate. I tested and still had this problem. I reset to Default and Re-Calibrated about 5 times to no avail.

LINK TO GIFs demonstrating the problem:

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

That firmware version had that jittering issue, you'll be fine flashing to the latest, so please do as follows:
1. Download the configurator;
2. Download the bootloader;
3. Download the firmware package (you'll need only the file called _Gladiator_NXT_v2_09_0.vkb;
4. Unzip all the 3 files in the same folder;
5. Launch VKBDevCfg as Admin and click the Bootloader button under Tools tab;
6. Navigate to the firmware file folder and load it up;
7. After the bootloader finishes launch VKBDevCfg and click the Default button under Tools tab;
8. After the joystick restarts go to Global/External/ExternalDevice and click the Find&AutoConfig button;
9. Go to Test/Axes1 tab and click on the Start Calibr button;
10. Move your pitch, roll and yaw axes, then the minithrottle and the ministick all the way, slowly at the end;
11. When done press the End Calibr and you're good to go.

I have done the steps above but the jitter is still there but not as persistent as before.

You mean those jumps are there without you touching the joystick?
Please post a screenshot of Profile/Axes/Physical and Logical axes.

Yeah the jumps happen on their own without touching the stick.

Are you absolutely sure you've done points 7. and 8. from above, reset to default and press the Find&AutoConfig? Try again, followed by a calibration.

I repeated the steps but the jitter still persists

Open it up and check the cable integrity; also, check around the magnets inside, there could be some metal shard or even a screw attached.

If thosse spikes happen when not touching anything, this might sound weird but bear with me (and goes with what Fallout suggests re: debris on the magnet).

Watch VKBJoyTester and do a bunch of big circles with the stick, clockwise, then counterclockwise. Then let go and watch again, see if the jitter/glitching settled down any. If so, that might point to there being some metal debris on the magnet faces, between the magnet and the MARS sensor. It will come back with time until cleaned as (I am guessing here) the metal kind of 'migrates' back to the center of the magnet after being rubbed around by motion. Or I suppose as there's a fairly slim gap between the circuit board back face and the magnet, that maybe some kind of 'pointy' debris might 'stand up' thus creating weird spikes in the otherwise nice and smooth magnetic field line distribution around the magnet flat face (I confess, I don't know how MARS sensors truly work, amusing since I do EM for a living, but this isn't something I've investigated much. I do know different magnet shapes alter the static magnetic field distribution, so adding ferromagnetic spikes to a permanent magnet might do the same...)

To get to the magnet faces you do need to remove the sensor circuit boards. You're just looking for not much more than dust, really. Just wipe them with something like a paper towel or tissue, wet with a tiny bit of isopropyl alcohol if you must to get debris to transfer to the tissue instead of the magnet. Reassemble and see if that helps...

Ok I have done what both of you have said and the jitter on the y-axis has gone away, only a tiny jitter on the x-axis (which is bearable). Will have to open it again and clean the magnet for x-axis. Thank you so much to the both you :D 8)

Very glad to help!

In the end did you see anything that seemed like debris on the Y magnet? I am glad that the operation worked for you but ultimately (being remote, not there with you) am uncertain if in the end it was just detaching and reattaching cables or whatnot that might have also just provided a better contact connection, by scraping a little oxidation off the pin contact surfaces or something...

I always want to know to help me give good advice, not misdirected-accidentally-right perhaps. ;-)
