Can't replace KG12 with SCG-L

Postby thunder686 » Wed Jul 17, 2019 16:02

I have a VKB-Sim Gunfighter Vintage KG12 grip and I have an SCG-L Space Combat Grip. I want to use the SCG-L grip on the base that the KG12 came on. Well, I tried to update the Black Box firmware so it can see the SCG-L grip. I get an error stating that the "device signature is not correct". The version of the controller is v1.96D. Has anyone run into this problem and has a solution for it. I followed the instructions but whatever I do and whatever firmware I try I get the same error.

Thunder, your bootloader is old, you should update it first. Probably your VKBDevCfg is old too. Get the latest versions from here: https://vkbcontrollers.com/?page_id=4609
You could follow this guide if you have problems: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ht8yMsdlCQ&t=

Fallout, thanks for the reply. I downloaded the proper files from the download page and followed the instructions from the video. I got the same results as before. When the ZBootloader-C comes up after hitting the bootloader icon the LEDs goes out on the Black Box before I hit the flash-it icon. I'm at a lost on what's going on.

I have another SGC grip with a base and it works fine. I tried the new SGC-L grip on it and it worked with no problems. Is there any special technique used for flashing the Black Box of a KG12 to except the SGC-L?

It's normal for the Black Box lights to turn off after you press the Bootloader button, don't worry about that. As soon as you have the Bootloader window on your screen press the '...' sign, select the firmware you want to flash (pay attention as there are different firmware versions for Kosmosima RH and Kosmosima LH), press OK to load it and after that hit 'Flash it!' button to begin the procedure.

I did just that but all I get is an error "Device Signature not correct - Flash Fail". On my other Black Box for my SCG, all is well but the one for the KG12 doesn't flash. The KG12 Black Box only works with the KG12 grip and nothing else. Is the Black Box for the KG12 flashable?

When you're flashing the Kosmosima firmware is your Kosmosima grip installed on the base?

I tried it both way. The first way with the KG12 attached parked it and changed to the SCG-L, no luck. The second way with the SCG-L attached from the start and finally with the KG12 on it the whole way through.

You mean you changed the grip during the flashing or calibration?
Here are the exact steps:
- disconnect the Black Box from USB;
- remove the grip and install the new grip;
- re-connect the Black Box to USB;
- make sure the Black Box is still connected to the base (doesn't matter the lights are different);
- follow the youtube guide I posted earlier;
- DO NOT remove/change the grip until the process is done.
- make sure you're following exactly all the steps from the guide.

I followed the step to the letter and got the same results (error). I noticed that in the video in the VKBDevCfg software the stick was labeled VKB-Sim Space Gunfighter L v1.96D. Mine before the attempted flash is VKB-Sim Gunfighter Vintage v1.96D. Anyways I make it to 2:13 in the video then I get the error. I'm using the newest software from the download page and I'm at my wit's end. The KG12 works as intended but I can't flash the box to use my SCG-L grip with the base and black box that came with the KG12.

That Bootloader screenshot looks like you're trying to flash the Kosmosima firmware with the KG12 grip still on your base.
Again, you have to disconnect the Black Box from USB, replace the KG12 with the Kosmosima LH, reconnect the USB to Black Box, do the flashing.

LOL, I did just what you said. It doesn't matter which grip is on the base it always shows the KG12 grip. Even if nothing is attached to the base. I'm going to try flashing it again on a different PC that has Windows 7 installed on it to see if anything changes. I will keep you informed.

If there's nothing attached to the base you shouldn't see what shows on the screen because in that context the Black Box should be disconnected from the USB port :))
You might need to hard reset your Black Box, but not before taking a break for an hour, have a coffee, take another look at the order of operations and give it another try. If it works with a grip there's no way it wouldn't work with another.
But until then could you post a screenshot like this one (Global/ External/ External devices):

I noticed that your config and firmware is different but that shouldn't matter. This screenshot is with the SCG-L attached but it shows the KG12.

Select Kosmosima L from the roll down menu under Device, click Set and continue with the Booloader - try to flash.
