VKB Defender Cobra M5 vs. VKB Defender Cobra M5 Rev. B.

Postby sgtbitterroot » Mon Nov 02, 2015 18:48

Hi all!

I've questions regarding these two sticks:
https://flightsimcontrols.com/store/joysticks/cobra-m5/ and https://flightsimcontrols.com/store/available/defender-cobra-m5-joystick-revb/.

Currently only the Rev. B. is available in Europe and I'd really want to have one of these. Now my questions are: What's the difference between these two sticks? Is it something mechanical/technical or something else? Is one better than the other? What stick would you recommend? Also, is it possible to modify the Rev. B.? On the website it says so, but there are no links displayed like on the normal one.

Thanks in advance!

About difference, it's a long story.
If you are interested in this story, I can explain you this long story.
6 years ago, we created Cobra M5 joystick for Defender. They produce total 3 generation of Cobra.
First generation's controller was based on cheap ATMEL MCU, because Defender wanted cheapest price. It was simple microcontroller whithout any additional function.
Second generation, we used Njoy 32 platform and MaRS digital sensor, same electronic solution we used in Mamba joystick. It's professional microcontroller with many functions.
When Defender got good sales, and joystick became popular in Russia, in order to get lower cost, they changed electronic solution to cheap one. They returned to cheap microcontroller and use old analog sensors, which is called third generation.
First and second generation of Cobra had relation with VKB, but third generation was produced without us.
You can identify your Cobra by this programme: http://ftp.vkb-sim.pro/Programms/show_hid.rar
And check version of firmware. If version:
1.01 - third generation
1.27 - second generation
1.07-1.13 - first generation
P.S. first generation was not easy to buy, because it was produced 5 years ago, and with not big quantity.

Pretty helpful topic. I'm only wondering, is the Cobra M5 Rev. B based on version 2 of the Cobra M5 (Njoy 32 platform) or are they produced using the other (cheaper) platform from version 3?

For visibility, I'd like to link another official answer about the Cobra M5 version (currently sold in Europe).

Rev. B = version 3
/// ВКБ Black Mamba MkIII / ВКБ T-Rudder MkII / ВКБ Gladiator / X-55 Rhino throttle / OpenTrack /// UTC +4 ///
