If I purchase a long stand, can it be configured like the short stand? It appears they have the same parts, with the long stand having an extra piece in the middle. It appears if the middle piece is removed, it can be made into a short stand?

Not really, but close. You can decide for yourself: short UCM vs long UCM.

So the long can't be made short?
