Using the Gladiator NXT/EVO base without a VKB grip?

Hello, I'm toying with some DIY ideas and one of them is building my own grip. I'd like to use it with the Gladiator NXT+EVO upgraded base I have, but am not sure if it will function without the grip. Anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?
EDIT: The grip wouldn't connect to the base electrically, it'd have a cable going elsewhere.

If you'll use the base without the grip you'll get the pitch and roll axes working, same as the 3 buttons, minithrottle and 2 encoders on the base.
