Mini Keyboard for the MFH

Postby darkstar77 » Wed Dec 08, 2021 23:54

Hello fellow sim enthusiasts. I have been working on a 3D printed mount that will mount a Gherkin 30 key ortholinear keyboard on the MFH.

First up, the Gherkin is an open source mechanical keyboard with 30 keys in total from the 40% club, which runs on QMK or TMK for custom firmware. It's a complete DIY project that requires you to source your own parts, PCB's, diodes, key switches, M2 standoffs and screws, and an arduino pro micro. The original post detailing the design can be found here: https://www.40percent.club/2016/11/gherkin.html My mount is designed specifically with these additional plates in mind, though you only need the top switch plate: https://www.40percent.club/2016/12/pcb-plates.html All the gerber files you need to order PCB's can be found here: https://git.40percent.club/di0ib/tmk_ke ... herkin/pcb For PCB ordering I use JLCPCB, which I have found to be the cheapest and most reliable. I have ordered a lot of PCB's from them over the last couple of years without issues.

The 3D printed part I designed, which sits snuggly on the MFH, is available here: https://thangs.com/Darkstar77/VKB-MFH-G ... gled-39666

Lastly, you'll want some relegendable keycaps to finish it off, as pictured above. They are basically two part keycaps, you print out the legend for the key, cut it out, and place it in the keycap; and you get custom labeled keycaps. Use the QMK layout editor, which has support for the gherkin, to setup your custom keyboard layout based on the sim / game you play the most. Mine is setup for Star Citizen.
