2 #50 Springs on MCG Pro Ulitmate

Postby kps300k » Thu Mar 25, 2021 4:11

I've read some conflicting info on forums about putting 2 #50 springs on the MCG Pro with extension. It appears the general consensus is not to do it.

However, there appears to be conflicting advice in this thread from VKB representatives several years ago.

I would like to get an official statement from member UIV, who I understand is the chief engineer and designer. Is it acceptable to put 2 #50 springs per axis on an MCG Pro Ultimate with 200mm extension?

UIV is chief engineer and designer, but also also the owner of the company. He'll surely pitch in :)

Well, if the chief engineer and designer who also happens to be the owner of the company says it's ok to put 2x50 springs on each axis then I'm doing it. Thank you for the prompt reply.

So the issues regarding bent pins was already addressed i guess.

Can you give us a review on using 2x50 springs on the Ultimate?

I've been saying it from the beginning, looking at it from a mechanic's POV, that it seems to me that's one heckuva lot of force to put on those little pins. It might work for a while but over the long term? That metal is gonna fatigue faster and eventually fail. Every time you move the stick that pin, strong as it is, is flexing. Sure, not enough to actually see but it's happening. That repeated stress in the same direction again and again is gonna add up and someday there's gonna be a loud snap! I have a 200mm extension on mine and went to a pair of 30s. I still don't like the ammount of force I'm applying on it at full deflection.

I know! I know! Oh ye of little faith!

Good thing we can buy new set of cams. But it should be covered. BTW how do we know what springs we are currently using? I know the plastic bag it came with have a labeled sticker but what if you take out the springs already I kinda forgot how much I put in there. I might have put #30+#50 both way.

So far, I am liking the feeling of the 2x50 springs and have had no issues for the last couple weeks...we'll see how it goes, but I expect no problems. I also have a Virpil Alpha with 200 mm extension/stiff springs and the Virpil is still stiffer than the VKB. However, the VKB grip feeling with the dampers and 2x50 springs is superior.

In my opinion, if the chief engineer/designer/owner of the company puts his reputation on the line to say that 2x50 springs per axis is ok then that is as good as gold...someone with bent pins notwithstanding. I trust that they have done their analysis and designed these pins to allow for 2x50 springs per axis.

Yes, 2 springs per axis which means 4 springs total being used.

That is where I am currently and really love it. (#30 and #50 per axis).
I also have some dampening dialed in with the clutches to firm up the center some.

I've been using 2x#50's per axis for the last 2 years without any issues, also using MCG-U and the 200 extension.

No, the numbers don't add linearly, they are just model numbers.
#30 + #50 is not the same as 2 × #40.
