Star Citizen Glad NXT and ALT key

Postby RottingMeat » Tue Nov 10, 2020 18:20

Hopefully this is a simply request.

PROBLEM: HOSAS setup with dual Glad NXTs to play Star Citizen. I want to set the outer index finger button ON BOTH STICKS (Reg 2 Line 8) to register a keypress (ALT) while the button is held. In Star Citizen this effectively makes it a "linked" SHIFT button. However, it looks like I do not have the option to just assign the ALT key. I have to pass a code. Imagine my surprise when I am ALT buttoning and I keep strafing left on foot because A (the default letter when you pick Left Alt) is the key chosen.

POTENTIAL SOLUTION A: Is there a way to just have to pass ALT?
POTENTIAL SOLUTION B: Identify what key code is a null scan code to pair with Alt. Is that KEY_Reserved? Will that pass a scan code different than just ALT?
POTENTIAL SOLUTION C: Use SHIFT instead of the modifier to feed many individual buttons. My problem with this solution is either I move the SHIFT key to the pinky button so it's not cramped using the current button for SHIFT on the upper-outside surface, OR I use zLink like one post mentioned because I can't figure out any other way to do a global SHIFT key. Just like using SHIFT on the keyboard, I am much more comfortable and faster at using a SHIFT button on the right stick to user the outer left 4 way on my left stick, and vice-versa.

I DO NOT want to add any additional software if possible (I know Joy2Key can do the ALT only press but I find it ridiculous to have a piece of software for the sole purpose of sending an ALT key). I really don't to use zLink if it's not a native application either, but at least functionality is built into VKBDevCfg.

Any of this make sense?

zLink is not going to work for my case. It's unidirectional only. It will allow SHIFT on the master device directed toward the slave, but not the other way around. Right now to do Solution C without a true Global SHIFT capability, I am looking at moving SHIFT to the pinky button (lowest part of the grip) because after sitting here for 20 minutes playing around with it, that appears to be the only button on each controller that feel comfortable enough to hold and access all other buttons while doing maneuvers on the same grip (adjustments, climbs, dives, turns, etc.). Maybe I just confirmed what everyone else has done and why that button is there, but thought I'd share my feedback so far. Still no progress on the other two solutions.

@RottingMeat. I used the "KEY_*******" with the Left Alt modifier. It worked for me in Star Citizen. the KEY_****** actually sends the scan code for Key_power but Star Citizen seemed to ignore the key_power code it and just sees the L-Alt key. I've been using is for a couple months and it has held up through the 3.7 - 3.11 updates. Hope this makes sense. I attached a picture. See you in the Verse!!

Note I tried this for Elite Dangerous and ED sees BOTH the Key_LeftAlt and the Key_power but is still worked for keybinds and power was not acted on.

Good luck.

Thanks TrainmanRob! I wasn't sure exactly what code that would send and as I was crunched on time (really wanted to play) I ended up using SHIFT with the pinky button. I really wish there was just a way for it to be an ALT key without sending another key. This will help a lot for those still awkward button combinations...at least until CIG decides they want to actually pick up that code for some reason lol. Luckily it doesn't change my button assignments, just have to adjust my mappings.

Hi, tks for this info..
But what is key_power exactly? I tried to use this method in Elite Dangerous, and it registers as Alt+Power+[key]. Hopefully it is not the real power button of my PC.. Tks.
