Anyoune using the default 10 cam and 20 spring ?

Postby Sparfell » Tue Aug 20, 2019 13:17

Hi

After finally receiving a MCG pro + Kosmosima left hand, both on gunfighter mkII, and deskmounts, I tried the whole system, with plenty of confidence on Elite Dangerous. But I was extremely disappointed, with the complete lack of center. After some "Google investigation" , I finally opted for #30 cam and #30 spring, and the result is quite promising 8) .

But the question remains, what is the use for the default #10 cam and #20 spring ? I suppose VKB chose that setting for a good reason, which I completely don't get .

If you want to use the #10 or #20 springs you have to increase the deadzone, especially for the #10 (soft center cams). The deadzone is set up by standard at 0.5. As an example, Virpil joysticks are coming with a deadzone of 2. Also keep in mind that Kosmosima is shorter and lighter than the MCG Pro so it will be easier to re-center.

Not sure if you are talking about the lack of center detent, or the fact that using Cam#10 the stick doesn't always center correctly by itself?

Yeah, sorry , I should have made my point clearer. I was talking about the lack of a good return to the center position, wich implies you need to increase the dead zone, which nullifies ( in my opinion ) what you would think a precise gimbal is.

Not sure about how accurate the centering should be with Cam#10 and 1xSpring#20, however I'm sure the Dry Clutch will make it less accurate. Make sure to check yours as by default it is tightened quite hard.

NOTE: VKB HQ tightened the frictioner of the dry clutch to prevent it from loosening during shipping. So before
you connect your Gunfighter to your PC, you will need to adjust the dry clutches for both pitch and roll axes
accordingly.

So Sparfell, if you really want to go for a soft springs/ low deadzone/ medium to hard dampers/ soft centering cams (#10) combination most certainly your stick won't center properly. But you have some options here, in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=3653. That would assume assigning a button to disable/ dampen the axes - you'd press this button when you're not maneuvering or combat; rest of the time your hand would be on the stick keeping it centered.

Na, I clearly don't want to go that way. I eventually ended with 30 cam and 30 spring, and I am happy with it 8).

I was just questionning the useability of the default setting, chosen by VKB ( certainly for a good reason ? ). And the answers given show I did not miss anything special in the setting ( which I feared ). So let's just say 10 cam and 20 spring is not for me .

Some people really like a light throw; I consider the #10 springs only as a supplement for different combinations of springs.

see VKB FAQ page :)
https://vkbcontrollers.com/?faq=what-are-cams-and-gimbals
The soft center cam provides very smooth joystick (or rudder pedals) travel; even when crossing from the pitch into the roll axis, and vice versa, the user usually does not feel much of the transition between axes (this is even smoother when using a Gunfighter with stick extension). The soft center cam might be the most realistic way to enjoy helicopter and fixed-wing simulations.
The hard center cam provides a definite center detent to which the axes return to, based on the centering springs. The user would feel a hard center position when transition between axes. Using such hard center cam might be beneficial when the user desires precise cutoffs when transitioning between axes, avoiding axes bleeding into each other while maneuvering. Such hard center detents might be desirable – for example, for space simulation games.
