hon0 has linked to a decent write-up of his expected personal preferences.
I too have ingrained muscle memory of aircraft flight controls including roll on the right stick x-axis, but through experimenting with a SpaceMouse I've found I can train to use my left hand for x, y, z strafe + roll using a floating puck, but left joystick twist is just a step too far for me to
intuit for anything outside of vertical strafe for a slow deliberate VTOL, versus quick+accurate control in a dogfight.
For space sims, primary in my mind is Star Citizen, I'd like to map a "
secondary" axis in respect to dogfighting & general spaceflight, which by my definition is:
- used in quick bursts rather than long sustained position (e.g. roll in space, or yaw if in-atmosphere flight model);
- used for short duration / only in certain situations (e.g. debatable, but vertical or horizontal strafe); and/or
- has a redundant means of control such as via toggle to other axis or -100%/0%/100% binding to a hat (e.g. longitudinal strafe or throttle).
I haven't locked in my preferred controls yet as the flight model of Star Citizen is still up in the air. At the moment I could see myself using dual brake levers for either vertical strafe, roll or horizontal strafe as an alternative to left stick twist.
