15-bit vs default 12-bit precision

Postby Bearfoot » Fri Jan 05, 2018 6:29

This post:

https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p= ... stcount=11

says that the default 12-bit precision can be changed to 15-bit using the configuration software.

My questions are:

(1) Is there any harm in setting all axes etc. to the maximum precision? Are there trade-offs in, e.g. processor load/performance?

(2) Why was the default set to 12-bit (especially if the answer to [1] is "no")?

Thanks!

Here goes:
NJoy32 is a multipurpose platform that can be used in a plethora of devices. Such, for example, as stirring wheels for driving sims. Those wheels can be turned to angles in excess of 270 degrees.
Our joysticks can be deflected to max 22 degrees.
Yes theoretically we can use 15-bit precision here, too.
Marketing is marketing, wow, 15 bit on a joystick...
However practically it will not do absolutely anything for improving the gaming experience because even the current precision is already well beyond human ability. A human hand can not move with precision in the range of 0.005 mm, full stop, end of story.
Same as in all those commercials. (I remember a failed advertising campaign some 15-20 years back: "Even more milk than before!!!" - yes, fine, but not so when you're advertising chocolate... because more milk means less chocolate, and even the dumbest consumers proved able to figure it out). Increasing precision where it is not necessary, you are loading the processor with extra job and taking resources it might otherwise use on something more important.
