I see that both the basic Gladiator and Gladiator Pro have plugins on back for external rudder pedals. Does anyone know if rudder pedals from companies other than VKB are compatible? I don't like the design of the VKB rudder pedals.

Nope, they're not.

But there's nothing stopping you using other rudder pedals and just connecting it through USB.
