Mode Switch programming STECS

I've been trying to get my mode switch to act as a modifier for any other button I press. Worked on it for hours using Mbutton method, but could never get it to register the logical button. To be exact. I was trying to get my Top Red Button to act as auto start in a normal mode and auto shutdown in a different mode. I went round and round. I've looked for exactly how to do it and found a lot of descriptions for last throttle but not the STECS. No video on it either. Help?? Gotta be possible, but I'm obviously missing something.

I've gone through the PDF step by step several times. No luck. When ever I test I get the mode switch to light up to different numbers as I change it, but when I press the red button , just get the number two switch with no change or other buttons showing.
