Encoder fine tuning

Postby wkwkwk » Thu Feb 06, 2025 18:31

The DCS F-86 has a dial for tuning into a navigational radio beacon. When interacting with the cockpit with a mouse you can use the mouse wheel to dial to a frequency with fine precision. I programmed a stecs encoder to use the clockwise and counterclockwise keyboard commands. When I turn the physical dial the virtual dial jumps more than when using the mouse wheel so I can't fine tune into the desired frequency. I don't think a trimmer will work since the radio dial doesn't have an axis and I don't think that the mouse wheel will work because it would not be dedicated to this one dial. Is there a way to fine tune the encoder? I've read the manual a couple of times but some of it goes over my head.

It may not even be possible because, oddly, using the keyboard commands directly, the dial jumps even more than when using the encoder.

Try new features for encoder customization. It is mentioned here.

Thanks. The discussion by Aero4000 seems to be exactly what I am looking for "The combination of GT + with a timing of 50 ... 60 Allows you to control the Hornet radar more precisely than the - = buttons..." Unfortunately, my setting of GT+ and 60 ms did not do the trick the on the F-86 radio radio. I will have to read some more. I bookmarked the NJoy32 documentation - thanks for that reference.

Based on the manuals and videos it seems really simple to convert a encoder to an axis. I think I followed the steps to convert the ring finger encoder to be axis 6, but it does not show any movement in the test tab nor the in JoyTester. I am obviously missing something. What am I doing wrong?

Got it. You have set the physical axis to be a trimmer +.
