Calibration prompt rant

Postby jukelo » Sun Jun 29, 2025 14:44

I don't like the new Calibration prompt in devcfg very much. That thing right here, opened by clicking 'Start Calibr.' in the tools tab:

Issue #1: It captures input.
You cannot switch to other tabs after this thing shows up. Forgot to switch to the test tab? Too bad, start again. Want to switch between the Buttons and Axes1 tab from the Test page? You'll have to use the 'In Window' button from the Axes1 tab. It's a pain in the butt.

Issue #2: It kills the 'Partial calibration' option.

If you only want to recalibrate one axis, you'd normally enable partial calibration under Settings, select your axis, and the bias and KD values for the other axes would be untouched after calibration.
Now, there's no axis selection since the new Calibration prompt takes over. This was an issue with STECS (still is) already and now this affects all devices. The workaround is disabling Acl and Acn for ALL the axes you don't want to calibrate. That's again a lot more clicks and chances to forget and mess up.

Issue #3: It's an extra click.
The Tools tab button is called Start Calibr, but doesn't actually starts calibration any longer. You have to press the actual start button.

Issue #4: The default wording is kind of confusing.
"Set axes to Zero position, Axes with center to the center". What is a zero position, what is an axis with center, where is the center, are these different instructions for axes with and without a center? The average user for whom this prompt is meant will have to guess as to the meaning here. Is zero an edge, or the value returned by the Test tab (which they can't access, of course). If zero is the value in the test tab, should they also chase that zero for their 'axes with center'. That's not going to end well!

The best fix would be visual instructions per device as was done for STECS.

Finally, although this feature could be improved for the average user, I do wish for an option to disable it entirely in zconfig.ini (including for STECS). It does add a lot of friction to the process for those of us who use devcfg daily.
