GLADIATOR ‘F-14 COMBAT EDITION’ arrived - lemon?

So I just received my Gladiator 'F-14 Combat Edition' and immediately noticed a rather annoying problem during testing:
When I press the trigger first detent (1), sometimes it doesn't register at all, and sometimes it registers any or all of the next three buttons - trigger full, SP/PH toggle and the pickle.
I have already flashed the stick
I have tried isolating the USB line (disconnected ALL other devices except for mouse, keyboard and one screen)
I have double- and triple checked that the connector is plugged in properly.

Do note I am only pressing "1", and rather rythmically.
What can I do?
Personal thought: If it were ANY other button, I could probably work around by just not using it, but the trigger is preeeeetty darn important, dammit, and it's not like I can get to the full press without also 'pressing' the first detent.
