Help with faulty Gladiator

Hiya
I have a Gladiator NXT with Premium Left grip that doesn't register with VKBDevCfg-C or ZBootloader2 programs. I have confirmed that the grip is working OK in a different base.
When I plug the joystick in the LEDs on the grip flash on for around a second - white and red - then just the main LED comes on blue and stays on.
If I press the hat I can switch between analogue and digital - ie the red LED indicates which state the hat is in.
I carried out the EVO upgrade on this stick - which worked OK apart from the pitch/Y axis not responding to input.
I backed out the upgrade to double check operation of the joystick - which is when there were problems.
When I first plugged it in, Windows came up with an error message that there was a problem with a USB device that I had just plugged in.
I then unplugged it - checked - then when I plugged it back in Windows didn't even register the fact - and it is now in the state as described.
Are there any checks/tests I can carry out to try and find the issue?
I suspect that the control board has failed and, as it is the original model, it'll be difficult to find a spare to 'fault find' on it - but I'll ask the question anyway!
Thanks for any help in advance
Kevin
