Ok, I seem to have been able to identify the component responsible for the comm error now. I started using the joystick for DCS Ah64 gunners position only and today I noticed the Windows chime for a device being connected while setting up my gaming setup. Checking VKBDevCfg-C I had connection to the base again without any comm errors.
I calibrated the joystick and I have control over the axes now but they are very very chittery. It very much looks like that I have an issue in the connector cable between the GF base and BB or the connection to the BB itself. I disconnected the cable between BB and GF base and after reconnecting I have now lost the axes again. So the issue is a) the cable between GF base or b) the connector to BB itself.
