Configuration and recocnition of GNX-THQ mounted on the left side of NXT

Postby Alois » Sat Jan 22, 2022 0:06

Hello, i had following conversation with you on youtube under the vkb tutorial video:

@VKB Sim Hello, I think I have the same issue. I just ordered a GNX-THQ module and installed it on the left side of my Gladiator Nxt as shown here in the video. The VKBDevCfg (v0.92.17) software doesn' t recognize any of the Gnx-Thq inputs while testing but it recognizes still the inputs of the Gladiator Nxt as before. Also Microsoft Flight Simulator does not recognize the inputs of the new installed Gnx-Thq. When I press the Default button no Find&AutoConfig button appears under external devices. After that I checked that all the cables are stuck together in the right way and they were. I am also in need of better instructions.

VKB Sim

@sandrowue What firmware are you using on your Gladiator NXT? If the firmware is too old the module(s) won't get recognized. YouTube is not really good for technical discussions. Please create a post with your issue on our official forums I'll guide you there. index.php

So my first question now would be how to find out which firmware I use?

Your firmware is too old and will work for your Gladiator NXT, but not for the modules, so you'll have to reflash to the latest firmware:
1. Delete everything VKB related from your hard drive;
2. Download latest VKBDevCfg;
3. Download the bootloader;
4. Download the firmware package;
5. Unzip all 3 downloaded files in the same folder;
6. Run VKBDevCfg as Admin and press the Bootloader button under Tools tab;
7. Choose the file called "_Gladiator_NXT_v2_09_0.vkb" and flash it;
8. Press the Default button under Tools tab;
9. Navigate to Global/External/ExternalDevices and click the Find&AutoConfig button;
10. Navigate to Test/Axes1, click the Start Calibr button and calibrate all your axes: pitch and roll, twist, mini throttle, press the ministick until the red LED comes on, then move it all around, move the THQ's axes up and down through their whole range;
11. Click the End Calibr and that's it.

I'd wish it would be so easy.
I deleted my old VKB softwares and downloaded the ones from your link.
Still I got first the notification that I have old firmware:

After that, when I try to push the Bootloader button there comes a note that i have to run it manually:

Although I can start the Bootloader program from its own folder I guess I have not yet managed to make the correct 'flash' there.

If that happens close VKBDevCfg and run it again, as Admin. Try to plug your unit directly to computer, not to a USB hub.

I tried to restart the program and reconnect the joystick again several times.
I don't use a usb hub and have pluged the usb cable direct to my computer.
The problem continues to appear. The program shows the nxt stick:
NXT R v2.010.png

But as I click Bootloader it still tells me to run it manually.
Can you advise me how to do the Bootloader process manually?
Or would it be possible and help to connect the GNX-THQ part directly whit an USB cable to the computer
instead of connecting it to the NXT stick?

If the bootloader is in the same folder with VKBDevCfg it should work. Also, in the picture you posted it won't work as desired simply because the device is not selected in the device list (bluish box) - click on the name of your device with your mouse, then click the Tools tab, then click the Bootloader button. In the next window navigate to your firmware folder and load it up.
Try to follow the above steps and let me know where you get stuck.

Now the device should be selected:

Still, when I next push Bootloader, the small window appears that I have to run manually.
I have all three softwares from your link above in the same folder named VKB.

Alright, let's run it manually. Run the bootloader and post a screenshot.

Click on the device name, then on the ... button. In the next dialog box navigate where the firmware is (_Gladiator_NXT_v2_09_0.vkb) and load it up. Click the Flash It! button to start flashing.

Ok, the new axes are moving now in the Vkb device software.
Actually I think after the load of the firmware and before the flash I had to double click the device Name and then click Flash and later click Flash a second time.
But it seems to work for now. I still have to check it with Microsoft Flight Simulator in the next days.

If it works in tester then it would work in any game that has joystick support.

But before getting there make sure you've also followed the 8 to 11 lines from the above walkthrough.

Thanks @alois for asking the same question as I had.

Many thanks to @fallout9 for the replies! I have not gone through this process yet, but will try it out today.

This is much different from most driver/firmware installations, where there is a simple .exe file to do the work.
