THQ lever encoder range issue

I got my THQ communicating in another thread, now I'm having trouble figuring out what the lever position outputs mean after calibration.
The lever swings about 90 degrees. Starting from the top:
0 - 20 degrees : output is 0 counts
15 degrees: output jumps straight to 65535
15 degrees to 70 degrees: output ramps from 65535 to 0 counts
70 degrees to 75 degrees: output is zero degrees
75 to 90 degrees: output jumps straight to 65535
It seems like there is some kind of range error in the raw signal or the basic interpretation of the raw signal that calibration does not fix.
