Try to seat properly the pins' PCB, push it with a small screwdriver on its sides - if it still moves then it's not in proper position yet.

After seating pcb in tail piece, there is still a couple mm of play. The rubber ring is firmly seated, the wires passing thru the ring slide have play as does the pcb they are connected to

Those deep scratches on the contact pads are a bit worrying as they show the grip was twisting on the base most probably because the fastener was not properly secured. The 3 pins might also have got affected, are they still all leveled, spring activated?

You have to make sure the PCB is sitting on the rubber ring and not on the cable because the cable doesn't have enough tension to keep it in proper contact with the pads on the base. The rubber ring is supposed to fit exactly inside the channel, so if the PCB moves than it's not in place yet.

Pins are relatively even and spring activated. Am getting steady connection now after pushing the shrink tubing down snug to the rubber ring, eliminating any play in the pcb.

That's the main thing to keep the pins' PCB in place. The second is to have the grip properly secured with the fastener, as if it rotates it could both damage the pins and contact pads and also pull the pins' PCB out of place.

I truly appreciate your guidance in helping my narrow down the issue! Confident that we’ve got it now. Thinking back on the ghost press issue previously, it makes sense that perhaps I didn’t have the grip entirely tightened down. I’ll be sure to verify that goin forward. Again, thanks for all your assistance in this matter. I’ll give the stick a proper testing in Elite Dangerous tonite.
