Gladiator Mk.II centers the elevator when pitched

Postby wingsofire » Mon May 11, 2020 5:52

I'm seeing this weird behavior when I push the stick all the way forward or pull it all the back and hold it. The elevator will automatically center back in the simulator. I've seen this same exact behavior in both FSX and DCS and leads me to believe it's an issue with my Gladiator Mk.II.

Any help or pointers to figure this out will be very much appreciated.

The device has to be properly calibrated before using it in games. After that, if there are still issues in game, it has to be checked with a tester. If everything is alright in tester then you could look into game’s settings.

I flashed the latest available firmware (v1_98_F) and calibrated using the VKBDevCfg-C.exe tool. And I believe that's when I started noticing this behavior. But I also just starting using the stick since I bought early this year. So I'm not entirely sure if the problem existed before I updated to the latest firmware.

When you say it must be checked with a tester, could you elaborate. Is there a specific application that you are referring to.

There's a tester in the VKBDevCfg, just go to the Test tab, then Axes. There you could try to see if you can replicate the issues from the game.

I couldn't reproduce it in the tester. So I restarted the computer. Launched both FSX and DCS and was able to reproduce the issue again the Gladiator. But this time instead of like 8 out of 10 times it would only happen 1 out of 20 times. Looks like the issue is gradually going away. I'm not sure if there is some sensor issue that is getting addressed just by using the joystick more.

Could you post a screenshot showing Profile/Axes panels?

The issue was back again in full extent - it was happening 10/10 times now. I've attached a picture of the Profile screen with the axes configuration.

Could you do another calibration? And this time don't push the stick too hard at the edges, just to the point where it meets some resistance. And you could include the throttle in the calibration, even if you don't use it.

I re-calibrated while trying to not to push the stick all the way to the physical end of the stick travel. Here is the screenshot of the profile axes.

Also tried out the stick in DCS after the recalibration and the issue is even worse now and besides the rudder the aileron is also now exhibiting the same behavior.

This last calibration looks really bad, almost like a reset to default. Should try again: press Start Calibr button, move grip along pitch and roll, twist grip, move throttle slider back and forth, hit End Calibr, post screenshot.
But please run it with the latest configurator: https://vkbcontrollers.com/wp-content/u ... .91.22.zip

I recalibrated with the latest version of the configuration and the numbers looked identical to the previous screenshot. So I decided the try to hardware calibration as documented here: https://vkbcontrollers.com/?faq=how-to- ... ator-mk-ii. And even then the numbers looked identical.

I then fired up DCS and am no longer able to reproduce the issue. It looks like unplugging and plugging the joystick (had to do it as part of the hardware calibration) causes the issue to at least temporarily resolve itself.

I've attached the screenshot of the calibration numbers from the hardware calibration.

I believe I figured out what the issue was. The CH Yoke that was plugged into the computer appears to have been intermittently interfering with the y axis of the Mk.II. Since I unplugged the Yoke I haven't seen this issue.

That's an interesting turnout. If you'll delve more into this it'd be great to hear your findings.
