The dead zone is being set up once you successfully finish the calibration. If your plane/ ship is drifting after calibration there are a few things you could change for a more definite return to center:
- release the dampers (dry clutch);
- install harder springs;
- change cams to H type (either Avia or Space);
- increase the dead zone through software.
For the latest option open VKBDevCfg, got to the Profile panel, then Axes panel, then Logical Axes panel. Look for the DzLo column for X and Y axes, that's your dead zone. It comes set up by default to 0.5 so try to increase it to 0.7 or even 1.0. If the next option, 2D, is activated, you'll be able to change the dead zone only on 1 of the axes, but that would be applied to both; if 2D is not activated then you'll have to set up the dead zone on both X and Y axes independently. When done click on the Action tab (if not already there), then hit the Set button to save the changes.

For MKI and MKII the #10 cams are soft centering (S type) and #30 cams are hard centering (H type).
For MKIII the Avia-S and Space-S are soft centering (S type) and Avis-H and Space-H are hard centering (H type).
As I was saying, the H-type cams helps a precise return to center.
