Can't bind T-Rudder in elite

I've just got the T-Rudder Mk IV and have attached it, updated the firmware and calibrated it. I got a response on the rotX axis in VKBDevCfG-C when I look at the test tab, and I can see what seems OK in the VKB JoyTester. However, I can't get Elite Dangerous to recognise the rudder to bind it to anything. On the external devices tab of VKBDevConfig-C I do get a red cross, don't know if that's related, or just because there's no base/stick attached. I'm at a loss as to where to start looking to fix this, would really appreciate some help.
