Gladiator Hatswitch interference

The gladiator hatswitch is way too close to the top of the stick and it's quite hard to push it right because of that. This is just a bad physical design.

I want to grind down the place where the stick interferes with the hatswitch movement to make room for my thumb, but I can't find any pictures or info on how thick the plastic is there.. I don't want to make a hole!

Any ideas?
