Gunfighter II MCG Pro X-axis malfunctioning

The X-axis on my Gunfighter II is having some problems. It doesn't respond smoothly to inputs. This is more extreme when pulling to the right, where it seems to "hang" about halfway even at max deflection, though it'll intermittently spazz between the half position and the full position. To the left, it will always respond to full stick deflection with full axis signal but it still doesn't transition smoothly between the intermediate positions. It will pretty much always find the correct center position. My most recent calibration made this somewhat better but it's a very noticeable problem, especially to the right. This problem first appeared about a year ago, but I was able to temporarily resolve it by "warming up" the axis, rocking it left and right until it was responding fully. This no longer works, so I'm turning to you.

Do you have any ideas? Are there any other diagnostic steps I should try?

This stick was a gift to me so I don't know who the dealer was. I'm pretty sure it was purchased through the VKB North America site if that helps, but I don't personally have an account there or any recorded purchases. How should I work around this?

Is there anything else you can tell me about the problem I'm having?

I'm also considering purchasing the MK3 upgrade kit. Would that resolve it? Would it make things better or worse?
