You won't need drivers or firmware, that much is plug and play. But in order to calibrate the stick you'll definitely need VKB's software installed. Yeah a blinking red light on the black box generally indicates a problem in the connection between the base and grip. It could be in the pins or also in one of the wire connectors inside the grip.
